Best Glock 26 - I'm going to be up front before I get into the Glock 26 Gen 5 review. For many years, the Model 26, Glock's smallest double stack 9mm, was my least favorite Glock.
When I started working in gun shops, the most compact Glock 9mm was the 19, but gun shop knowledge and gun magazine advertising led me to think the fairly new .40 S&W caliber was next. The best thing about Thor's hammer, And that's how I carried it, it's a .19 twin, .40 caliber, the Glock 23.
Best Glock 26
I took a few years off from selling guns in the late 1990s, and that time coincided with the explosion of the concealed carry movement across the country. When I returned to work and carried pistols part-time in '98, I discovered that Glock had expanded its product line to take advantage of the boom in concealed carry with the introduction of the subcompact Glock 26 9mm.

Well, I still didn't believe in 9mm, so I bought the Glock 26's cousin in .357 SIG, the Glock 33, and never warmed to it.
See, the Glock 26 and sub 27 were the first Glock pistols to feature molded finger slots in the foregrip strap and dimpled thumb rests on the frame. They did this to accumulate enough "points" under an obscure rule introduced by the Gun Control Act of 1968. A breakdown of the point system can be found here on the NRA-ILA website but basically due to losing points. size and weight, the sub Glock 26 had to pull them out in a different way, and the "target grip" was worth five points.
For me and others, those finger grooves were just in the wrong place. On the larger Glock models, this wasn't such a big deal; A utility size car will allow for a fair amount of "slanted" grip and still perform well. But a small gun? Punishes bad perception.
I avoided small Glocks until the Glock 43 came out and I bought one. It's made in house so it didn't have to match the import points, so there are no finger grooves. Hooray! But the thin stick-like grip of the single-line pistol mercilessly punished the wrong grip.
Glock 26: Everything To Know About The Ultra Concealable 'baby Glock'
When asked to review the Glock 26 Gen 5, my response was lukewarm at best. As I said, the 26 was my least favorite Glock, despite seeing the light of the 9mm as a defensive cartridge.
When I got my hands on the review sample, I was immediately impressed with some of the things that came out of the box.
First, the Gen 5's optional "bold" factory AmeriGlo sights are leaps and bounds ahead of most factory pistols that aren't currently semi-optimized at a high level, at least for carry sights. For a decade now I've been taking the factory sights off my carry gun and throwing on a Trijicon HD or AmeriGlo Pro with their thick, contrasting front dots. Now I can take it out of the box like this. Well done Glock!
Second, the trigger on this Glock 26 test sample is by far the best factory Glock trigger I have felt. I know Glock has always described their factory triggers as "5.5lbs", but in reality they've always been more like 6 or 6.5lbs, supporting the steep market of trigger modifications.
Glock 26 Subcompact
Thanks to the new Gen 5 architecture, the trigger on this Glock 26 is an honest 5.25 pounds on my RCBS trigger pull gauge. Also, the weight is quite uniform throughout the trigger pull, unlike the previous Glock trigger, which had little resistance in the initial pull before hitting the wall is felt. It feels almost exactly like the modified Glock triggers, which use Glock's green "NY1" plastic trigger return spring and a 3.5 pound "minus" connector to achieve the same feel.
However, the proof is in the photography, and two small adjustments to the Glock 26 Gen 5 grip compared to my Gen 3 Glock 33 from a long time ago, make all the difference in the world. First, there's the new, rougher grip texture, which is a huge improvement over the Gen 3. Second, the annoying ridge between the finger grooves is gone.
Instead of it trying to push my fingers like a fixed wedge, I can now slide my fingers and ring finger higher on the grip and it improves control. Also, the standard caliber grip makes it easy to shoot quickly and accurately like my Glock 43. At 22 ounces empty, it's only three and a half ounces heavier than the single-barrel Micro Glock, though it's half as good. Ammo capacity, this difference increases by an ounce when loaded, depending on what you load it with.
For the round and increased capacity I think this will be the first Glock 26 I buy. I'm going to see if this can really take the place of my Glock 43 as the "J frame for the new thousand".

However, the ongoing debate is between the Glock 26 and the Glock 43. Both models have a lot to offer, especially when it comes to concealability and reliability.
While we probably can't decide that argument here, we'll dive into the specs so you can make an informed decision about which 9mm slim polymer pistol is best for you.
Is The Glock 26 The Best Carry Double Stack?
Even on paper, the difference between these two subcompact pistols is minimal. The biggest difference is how the cartridges are stacked in the magazines.
The G43 has a single cartridge magazine. Rounds in single stack magazines are arranged in one vertical column.
The G26 has a dual cartridge. Double-stack magazines hold their pages in a sort of back-and-forth zigzag pattern. The cartridges are arranged in two columns. The upper cartridge of each column is alternately fed into the weapon chamber. The design makes the magazine (and the gun that holds it) wider than a single stack. However, the double stack configuration can hold more rounds in a shorter area and can hold about one and a half times more rounds in the same vertical space.
The length and height of the G26 and G43 are quite similar. The G26 is slightly longer, wider and heavier, but not significantly so. The most noticeable difference in dimensions is the width. While a quarter inch may not seem like much, it can make a world of difference in effective concealment. The slimmer profile allows the G43 to easily disappear under anything in your wardrobe, especially a good IWB holster.
Glock 26 Vs Glock 43
While both pistols are fairly easy to conceal, the slimmer dimensions of the G43 make it particularly useful in the pocket. However, with the Glock's easy trigger pull and lack of an external safety, slipping it into your pocket without a proper holster is just silly.
The grip on the G43 is 0.24 inches narrower. However, the extra 0.08 inches of length gives it a bit more real estate. If that doesn't sound like much, you're right.
Considering that the average human pinky is about 0.3 inches wide, the extra 0.08 inches of grip height still slips off the bottom of the grip for most people. Fortunately, pink extension magazines are available for both models, but every extra inch you add to these firearms detracts from their concealability, which is really their best feature.
Which grip is better? It's mostly a matter of opinion. There are many articles floating around the internet claiming that the narrow frame of the single stack makes it easier for smaller hands to control. Most of the articles are written by guys with big paws. The truth is that it is good for shooters with thin hands to have something significant to hold on to. Neither the G43 nor the G26 has a grip that is too clumsy for someone with small hands to control. In fact, the slimmer dimensions of the G43 may make it difficult for some shooters (regardless of hand size) to maintain a steady and secure grip. Individual packs tend to slip in the hands of some shooters while shooting, especially if the hands are sweaty.

Small guns are notoriously harder to control, whether you have loose hands or delicate feminine palms and fingers. Putting a firearm into an already smaller grip only increases the difficulty.
But here's the deal: every shooter is different. The best way to find out if a grip will work for you is to do a thorough test drive. Take the test drive at the range, not on the showroom floor. Just because a firearm "feels like it."
