The Navy Berthing Barge: Worse Than Life On An Actual Ship?
Naval Station Great Lakes has 38 buildings and more than 20,000 beds in unaccompanied housing. If you're an E1-E4 sailor arriving at a base without a family tow, chances are you'll end up at one of them. All buildings are fully equipped and include all the facilities you need, so everything you need is provided. There is a laundry room. There are lounges with big screens for you to let off steam at your leisure.
This is your first call when you receive your PCS to Great Lakes. The housing office is full of knowledgeable staff who can help you with any questions you may have. They are available to guide you through who is eligible for housing, how to move, and discuss room availability with you. Make sure you get all the information you need to make your transition as smooth as possible.
This is a great community with lots of green space and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes in a variety of different ranges. Each comes with a garage, balcony or terrace and all the standard home comforts like garbage disposals, central air conditioning and spacious closets. Forrestal Village is home to a youth center and child development center, so your kids will be fully occupied.
Fort Sheridan is another neighborhood with different houses with different rank requirements. From duplexes to single-family homes, you may qualify to live here and live with people of very different levels of experience and background. Homes here come with garages, ceiling fans, dishwashers, and washer/dryer hookups. For those who love the outdoors, there are hiking trails along Lake Michigan.

Glenview offers townhouse floor plans available for all ranges. 960 square feet with 2 bedrooms and 1.5 baths. There is a private balcony with French doors, a breakfast nook, a spacious half bath, 2 master bedrooms with walk-in closets and more. It is suitable for families, because the landscaped green space has playgrounds and places for children to play.
Halsey Village has 2 and 3 bedroom units with a double garage or finished basement. The complex is located next to the commission for easy access to shops. It is also close to other great basics. The 2 bedroom home is equipped with basement laundry and extra storage and is available for all levels. A 3-bedroom is also available for all ranges and features a fireplace, balcony and master suite.
This neighborhood has a lot to enjoy. Single-family and townhomes are available in 2, 3 and 4-bedroom floor plans. From 1,000 square feet to 1,300. And all states are eligible. Community offers quick access to schools, pavilion and baseball field. For those with an active lifestyle, there are walking trails in every home and neighborhood. Every home in Nimitz Village has a one car garage.
There are many great communities where you can choose to live on base. Fortunately, most levels are eligible for everything here, so eligibility probably won't be a hindrance. To be sure, contact the housing office to find out what's available and double-check your eligibility. Also, not all floor plans are available at any time. You need to make sure the community you want has room for you and your family. But don't worry, because there are more than enough great Navy Yard Great Lakes neighborhoods for everyone.
