The American casual-dining restaurant opened in Carmel in 2000 and is famous for its junk burger cheeseburgers and quirky artwork and local ingredients that cover the walls.

James Blystone, vice president of franchising and communications for Glacier Restaurant Group, the parent company of Max & Erma's, said construction along the U.S. has been affected. 31 and Carmel Drive.

“We love the Carmel area and if we can find a good location for the restaurant, we would love to return,” said Blystone. "Before all the new freeway traffic patterns, this location was one of our best and easily accessible."

Construction began in 2015, and the roundabouts became the entrances and exits of the US 31 expressway, but it hurt many businesses, especially restaurants, which lost 50 percent of their customers.

Carmel launched a campaign called #31Bites that called on residents to eat and shop in the hallway 31 times in August 2014.

The restaurant is located in the Hamilton Crossing shopping center which is home to at least three other restaurants and a hotel. After Thursday, the Edinburg location will be the only one in Indiana.

Owner j. Italian restaurant Razo in the same mall blamed construction for the closure in September 2018.

“We are always sad when companies leave. The area has flourished on both sides of the highway," Carmel spokesman Dan McFeely said in an email.

The restaurant was initially closed last week due to a broken boiler, said Steve Hayward, executive director of the Eastwood Downtown Development Authority.

But a sign posted on the restaurant's door on Wednesday directed people to the company's website to find nearby locations.

The restaurant was one of the last three operating in the state. It weathered a round of closures in January when former parent company American Blue Ribbon Holdings closed 13 locations in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana to streamline operations.

That same month, ABRH sold the chain to Montana-based Glacier Restaurant Group. However, ABRH retained ownership of the Eastwood location, said James Blystone, vice president of communications for Glacier Restaurant Group.

ABRH officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment as to why the restaurant closed. The location has been removed from Max and Erma's website.

Max & Erma's was founded in 1972 in Columbus, Ohio. The chain is known for its informal dining and quirky artwork covering the walls of the restaurant. The other two Michigan locations are in Clinton Township and Detroit Metro Airport.

This is the second restaurant closed this month in the Eastwood area. Tony Sacco's Coal Oven Pizza has closed in the Heights of Eastwood development, north of Eastwood Town Center. The restaurant, which opened in 2012, was The Heights' first tenant.

Max & Erma's, a nationwide chain of fast-casual restaurants, known mainly for its iconic fries, opened its first restaurant in 1972 in German Village. Now, fifty years and several local restaurants later, the Columbus-based chain operates only one location in downtown Ohio after the recent closure of the Reynoldsburg restaurant.

Max & Erma's has operated nearly ten restaurants in the Columbus metropolitan area since first opening in German Village. Its original restaurant closed in early 2017, and as of 2020 Reynoldsburg, Arena District and Lancaster are the chain's only locations in the area.

Today, at 2703 N. Memorial Dr. Max & Erma's Lancaster, located here, is the only one in Central Ohio. There are no suitable locations in Columbus.

If you want to own a piece of Max and Erma's history for posterity, the chain's Reynoldsburg location will hold a liquidation auction on September 13.
