WASHINGTON - The United States announced today that it will immediately begin separating soldiers who refuse to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

According to a directive issued by Secretary Christine Warmuth, commanders must initiate involuntary administrative separation proceedings against any soldier who refuses a Covid-19 vaccination order and does not have an approved or pending release request. The order applies to enlisted soldiers, active duty reserve soldiers in Title 10 and cadets.

"Readiness depends on Soldiers who are ready to train, deploy, fight and win our nation's wars," said Secretary Christine Warmuth. “Unvaccinated soldiers are a threat to the force and a threat to readiness. We will begin the procedure of forced separation of soldiers who refuse to order the vaccine and do not wait for the final decision on release.
Directive 2022-02 details how commanders should proceed with the separation procedure and mandates that these separation actions be processed as quickly as possible. Members of the military who are discharged for refusing to comply with an order to get vaccinated against COVID-19 will not be eligible for involuntary severance pay and may be compensated for any unearned special or incentive pay.
As an exception, soldiers who complete their discharge or retirement or begin transitional leave on or before July 1, 2022, will receive a temporary release and be able to complete their discharge or retirement.
The worst service rating that can be awarded is general (honorable) unless an additional offense warrants separation from a dishonorable service rating.

Unvaccinated soldiers who have requested a medical exemption or religious accommodation are temporarily exempt from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement while their requests are processed.
Soldiers denied a medical exemption or religious deployment request will have seven calendar days from the denial to do one of the following or face separation proceedings:
Commanders will ensure that all non-vaccinated service members meet the requirements for Covid-19 screening and testing, as well as applicable safety standards. Leaders will continue to advise all unvaccinated persons about the health benefits of receiving the Covid-19 vaccine.
To date, there has not been a single soldier who has been involuntarily separated simply because he refused a lawful order to receive the Covid-19 vaccine. As of January 26, commanders had fired a total of six rank-and-file commanders, including two battalion commanders, and issued 3,073 written reprimands to general officers and soldiers for refusing vaccination orders.

Us Army Begins Discharging Soldiers Who Refuse Covid Vaccine
Officials review each request on a case-by-case basis to determine whether an exemption is appropriate. Medical requests are primarily reviewed by medical professionals, while religious deployment requests include an interview with the soldier's chaplain, command recommendations, as well as a public health screening and legal review.
All Soldiers who refuse a vaccination order without an approved or pending discharge request are subject to certain adverse administrative actions, including flags, debarments, and formal reprimands. Soldiers who continue to refuse vaccination orders without an approved or pending release may be subject to additional adverse administrative action, including separation.
As soldiers are accessed and released, and data tracking processes continue to improve, vaccination rates will vary slightly.
